Perth Moves 2024 – Bursaries and Scholarships

First-round Workshop Series bursaries and scholarships

 

1. BlakDance + STRUT Bursary

For: First Nations Australian dance artist

Offer: $1170 for unlimited participation in Perth Moves workshops $3600 payment to cover a stipend, shared accommodation, flights and airport transfers.

Total Value: $4770

BlakDance is a national industry organisation for First Nations contemporary dancers and choreographers.

STRUT is a choreographic centre based in Boorloo, Western Australia. STRUT nurtures and sustains a thriving community of diverse dance artists and connects them with audiences to share their work.

Together, BlakDance and STRUT have identified the need for redress for First Nations dance artists that seeks to address the historical lack of support for First Nations contemporary dance artists.

2. Co3 Bursary

For: Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander dance artist

Offer: $1170 for unlimited participation in Perth Moves workshops

Co3 produces contemporary dance, delivered by national and international leaders, at the forefront of Australasian art. Led by Raewyn Hill, a working artist, maker, educator, performer, and director, the annual artistic program centres on the development, creation and touring of major and minor scale works that are uniquely physical, multidisciplinary in nature, and technological in focus. Co3 is committed to empowering and inspiring the next generation of artists.

Co3 is proud to provide the Co3 Bursary for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander dance artist to participate in Perth Moves 2024.

3. Dancehouse Bursary

For: A Victoria-based dance artist

Offer: $1170 for unlimited participation in Perth Moves workshops

The bursary’s goal is to encourage connection and exchange between dance artists based on the East and West Coasts. Dancehouse’s role is threefold: to advance independent dance artists, to build dance audiences, and to develop the artform itself. With artists and audiences, we are co-creating a context for independent dance, in its diversity, to be accessed and appreciated. Together, we are nurturing dance making and dance thinking; we are building dance literacy and dance’s legacy.

4. M. Helgeby Chaney Bursary

For: 2 WA dance artists in their first 3 years of practice

Offer: $1170 for unlimited participation in Perth Moves workshops

Total Value: $1170 each, 2 bursaries available

A WAAPA graduate, Margrete danced as a leading artist with West Australian Ballet, Chrissie Parrott Dance Company (Perth) and Rambert Dance Company. With Stefan Karlsson, she founded loaded which toured nationally and to New Zealand, and co.loaded; performed as part of the Perth International Arts Festival. In 2005, she was awarded Most Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer at the Australian Dance Awards. Margrete was named in the best individual performer category by Dance Australia Critic’s Choice in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2005 and nominated for several Green Room Awards and Australian Dance Awards. Margrete’s experience now extends beyond performance to advocacy, project management, audience and membership engagement, strategy and policy development in the arts. She has lectured in dance and continues a long-standing relationship with opera working variously as Assistant Director, Director and Choreographer. Over the course of her career, Margrete has served on advisory panels and Boards in dance at the national, state and local level. She is currently the Chair of Co3 Contemporary Dance Company.

Holding two Bachelor of Arts degrees (WAAPA at Edith Cowan University and the University of Western Australia), Margrete was awarded an MBA with distinction from the University of Western Australia in 2020.
She is passionate about dancer wellbeing and career transition pathways.

5. Perth Festival Connect Bursary

For: WA regionally-based, 18-26 year old dance artist

Offer: $1170 for unlimited participation in Perth Moves workshops $600 towards travel to and from Boorloo $1155 for shared accomodation for duration of workshops

Total Value: $2925

Perth Festival is a not-for-profit multi-arts festival that brings world class performance, music, film, visual arts and literary events to Perth, Western Australia, every summer.

The Festival’s Connect program provides pathways into the Festival through creative learning, community, and arts industry. They invite you to help continue to develop local talent, encourage the next generation of artists, and share the enriching Perth Festival experiences with diverse communities.

6. Transit Bursary

For: An alumni student from a Transit Pre-Professional course in their first three years after graduation

Offer: $1170 for unlimited participation in Perth Moves workshops

Total Value: $1170

Founded in 2015, Transit has established itself as a leading institution for pre-professional dance training including its renowned Contemporary Dance course. Providing a practical and performance driven environment, Transit has produced successful alumni who excel as dancers, choreographers, and educators. With a commitment to providing holistic excellence, Transit is recognised for producing highly physical and creative artists.

7. Wellesley Studios Scholarship

For: Aotearoa/New Zealand-based dance artist*

Offer: AUD$1170 for unlimited participation in Perth Moves workshops
Up to NZ$1200 towards travel to and from Boorloo
AUD$1155 for shared accomodation for duration of workshops

Total Value: AUD$3500 (subject to conversion rates)

Wellesley Studios Dance House has been established to support the ongoing development of the NZ dance industry. Part of its vision is to provide support for the professional independent dance sector and in as such is offering a scholarship to Perth Moves 2024.

*It is possible for New Zealanders based in Australia to apply however priority will be given to those based in New Zealand.

8. STRUT CALD Bursary

For: A WA dance artist from a CALD* background

Offer: $1170 for unlimited participation in Perth Moves workshops

Total Value: $1170

Our vision is to support a local, national and global network of dynamic dance artists whose work reflects and contributes to our understanding of the world and celebrates dance as a driver of human connection.

*CALD. An acronym that covers people from Culturally And Linguistically Diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to people born overseas, people with one or both parents born overseas and people who speak a language other than English at home
