Gary Lang

Gary Lang is the Artistic Director of the Indigenous owned Gary Lang Northern Territory Dance Company. He is a Larrakia man from Darwin with extended family relationships in Yirrkala NT.

He trained at the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA), graduating in 1990. Since then he has performed, choreographed and travelled globally with some of Australia’s premier dance companies including Bangarra, Dance North & the Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre Company. The isolation of his hometown has led to formidable global collaborations, including with Deborah Cheetham, the Western Australian Ballet, The Australian Ballet, BlakDance, NAISDA, Northumbria University and Miami Dede College.

Gary creates sensual and evocative works presenting what has been described as ‘Aboriginal Ballet’, embedded in the traditions of an Indigenous Australian tale of spiritual interaction and retribution. His motto is: he will work with anyone who wants to tell his stories.
