Presented in partnership with PICA, the residency supported a WA-based Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artist with a one-month studio residency and a $5,000 artist fee. It created space for artistic research, experimentation and creative risk-taking without requiring the development of a finished work.

2024 ATSI Residency artist
Janine Oxenham

(Malgana Yamatji)

In 2024, the residency was awarded to Malgana Yamatji artist Janine Oxenham, who worked in PICA’s Studio 2 from 28 October to 24 November. Responding in part to the aftermath of the 2023 Voice referendum, Janine explored connection, belonging and safety within personal, communal and broader social contexts. Her research drew together movement, text, storytelling, audio and visual provocations, supporting a process grounded in spirit, Country and community. The residency offered dedicated time for ideas that had been developing within her practice, reflecting her belief in art’s capacity to reshape perspectives, support social change and enable communities to tell their own stories.

“I’m excited about the opportunity that this residency poses for me to delve deeply into ideas that have been brewing within, especially in light of recent referendum outcomes and flow on effects. I firmly believe in the power of the arts to drive social change, reshape perspectives, and enable communities to tell their stories.

When creating, I enjoy working with text, connecting thoughts, audio and visual provocation, task-based approaches, and storytelling. My practice thrives in a state of flow, where I am fully connected to my spirit, the land, and the people I am with.”
