Sonya Stephen

Born and raised in Port Hedland, Western Australia, Sonya started dancing at the age of eight and trained further in Sydney. She gained a deep understanding of movement as an expression, a voice, and later worked as a freelance choreographer, leading workshops for diverse groups.

Recently, Sonya has worked as the choreographer and producer for the Kulap Vine Project, a community contemporary dance initiative on Thursday Island, Torres Straits. Additionally, she collaborated with Annette Carmichael, Choreographer and Creative Producer, performing in one of Annette’s works titled “Chorus,” which united 200 women to dance against violence. More recently, Sonya choreographed Chapter three for “The Stars Descend” with Annette Carmichael Projects, a production that narrated stories of Gondwana link to promote climate action and hope.

Sonya choreographed for “Djookan Kakarook,” a group of Noongar women raising awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women. She also choreographed for Cecil Andrews College and the Follow the Dream Initiative documentary “Bringing the Children Home,” as well as a duet about Mr. Eddie Koiki Mabo. Additionally, she has also created a piece titled “Bullying is not our Culture” for Kenmore Anangu School, which won best choreography at the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands Dance Competition.

Sonya has a wealth of experience in the Performing Arts industry, adeptly teaching individuals across Australia. She advocates that “Everyone has a story to tell, and through creative movement, this can help bring forth awareness, understanding, courage, strength, a sense of purpose, reconciliation, and healing to both communities and individuals.”
