Charmene Yap

Charmene is a multi-award-winning dancer, choreographer and rehearsal director.

She has danced with companies such as Sydney Dance Company, Chunky Move, Tasdance, Dancenorth, Lucy Guerin Inc. and Armitage Gone! Dance Company and performed works by countless national and international choreographers including William Forsythe, Alexander Ekman, Tanja Liedtke, Rafael Bonachela, Gideon Obarzanek, Emmanuel Gat, Lucy Guerin, Jacopo Godani, Stephanie Luke, Melanie Lane, Antony Hamilton and Andonis Foniadakis amongst many others. Her dancing earned her critical acclaim with several awards including two Helpmann Awards for Best Female Dancer in 2012 and 2014, and Australian Dance Award in 2013. She has also featured in short films and music clips. As a choreographer, Charmene has created works performed by Sydney Dance Company and Pre-Professional Year, Co3 Company amongst several independent projects including ‘Grey Rhino’ with co-choreographer Cass Mortimer Eipper, which premiered in Sydney Festival 2022. Creating across artforms, Charmene has worked on films, fashion shows, theatre and site-specific performances, collaborating with companies like Belvoir St Theatre and artists such as Lauren Brinkat and Del Kathryn Barton. She is currently Rehearsal Associate of Sydney Dance Company where she works with both the artistic and education departments.
