Kathleen Szalay Mulholland
2023 Mid-career artist in residence
Kathleen Szalay is a multimedia dance artist. Her projects, under “Taffyworks”, are created, exhibited and performed in unconventional spaces for a wide audience. Her work has been presented in New York, Maine, Dublin, Melbourne, Newcastle, Mandurah, Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Geraldton and Perth.
For the past decade, Kathleen has worked with her husband, Fionn Mulholland, presenting dance through film, long-exposure photography, projection and installation, as well as live performance. From 2015-2017, the pair led recurring dance-film workshops in the remote community of Burringurrah. Kathleen has also worked extensively with sound producer, Elise Reitze-Swensen, creating soundtracks to her choreography through live recordings of movement sounds and vocalizations.
Kathleen’s current ongoing project, Your Place, focuses heavily on the community for inspiration, asking deep questions about our connections with nature. Audio and written recordings of these conversations drive movement creation, which is then photographed with long exposure and layered into an abstract visual artwork.
