When conceived, STRUT marked the coming together of a community; how best could independent dance artists support each other? How might they formulate themselves together to funding bodies, to assist each other pursuing sustainable, independent dance practice in Western Australia? In line with this original mission, and under STRUT’s new direction, co-directors James and Sofie, invite members to a TOWN HALL; a meeting to connect, exchange and dream up futures, together. The format of the TOWN HALL will take inspiration from forums such as Devoted and Disgruntled and conversation starters such as open space technology, to invite members to lead conversations with peers, that address both personal, group and sector-wide concerns, surrounding dance and choreographic practice in Boorloo, Australia and world-wide.

For the event, we invite members to formulate a question that they’d like to initiate a conversation with peers. STRUT Dance is currently developing its vision for the next four years. We have listed some of our own questions below, which we encourage members to take up, if they are of interest.

BOORLOO DANCE SECTOR NEEDS:
What’s missing? What’s there an abundance of? What’s working and not working?

I AM A BOORLOO-BASED DANCER / CHOREOGRAPHER / DANCE TEACHER / DANCE WRITER etc. AND I WANT MY WORKING LIFE TO LOOK LIKE THIS:
Frequent presentation opportunities? Abundance of space for artistic practice? Interstate / international exchange opportunities? Professional development opportunities? Dance training every day? Artist-led?

I AM A BOORLOO-BASED CHOREOGRAPHIC CENTRE IN 2023:
What am I? What do I do? What could I be and do? How do I assist choreographers? How do I hinder choreographers? Where are my 2022 blind spots?

STRUT encourages its members to formulate questions on their own interests, so please feel free to form questions on completely different topics to what we have listed.

During the TOWN HALL, questions will be positioned around the room and multiple conversations will take place at once; participants will be encouraged to move around - lingering, staying and / or leaving each conversation as they please. STRUT will position and schedule each question, throughout the evening – with plenty of rest breaks! You can choose to host your question by staying near it or choose to let your question be hosted by others. If you can’t attend the event but would like to provoke conversation around a certain topic, please send through your question, anyway.

To accommodate each question in the time and space of the event, we ask members who have a question that they want to start a conversation with, to:
In the body of an email, write your question and your name
Title the email: TOWN HALL QUESTION
Address email: director@strutdance.org.au
