Michael Smith

Michael Smith (he/him) is an award-winning artist working within contemporary dance, dance-theatre, film and installation. With Queerness being a driving force in his process-ing, Michael foregrounds “Dance”, the body, in a practice that experiments with and empowers modes of existence that lay on the peripheries of dominant narratives and societal norms.

Michael’s choreographic work has been presented at esteemed national and international platforms including MONA FOMA (Lutruwita), Brisbane Festival, MELT Festival: Brisbane Powerhouse, Dance Massive (Naarm), Metro Arts (Meanjin), Desert Festival (Mparntwe), Umbrella Studio of Contemporary Arts (Gurambilburra), Ars Electronica (Austria), TanzZiet (Berlin), AGITART Figueres Festival MOU (Spain), Japan Media Arts Festival and Sunshine Coast Arts Prize. In 2021, his work COWBOY (in collaboration with The Farm) received a Matilda Award for Best New Australian Work. Michael is currently a dancer / performer with Dancenorth Australia under the Artistic Direction of Kyle Page and Amber Haines, based on Gurambilburra – land of the Wulgurukaba and Bindal people. He also continues to collaborate with The Farm, a physical theatre / contemporary dance company which significantly influenced his formative years as a performer and maker.
