Stephanie Lake (Delivered)

A true Australian original

New to STRUT Dance - the remarkable Stephanie Lake

From 2017 STRUT is building a new three-year partnership with Australian choreographer Stephanie Lake. A truly original voice, Stephanie developed her practice through the ranks and seminal work of Chunky Move and Lucy Guerin. Her gusty physicality and kooky poetics allied to an intellectual rigor make Stephanie’s work a wonderful and varied choreographic landscape to investigate.

The week long workshop will give participants direct access to the choreographic process Lake uses to create her works, including devising of movement material and the construction and layering of physical ideas toward bigger conceptual and metaphorical contexts. The focus will be on working instinctually and playfully side by side with a rigorous and disciplined approach to dance making. Participants will work using improvisation, imagery and physical rigour with an emphasis on the joy and fun found in the creative process. This will be a chance to experience the highly physical, intricate and rhythmically complex movement language that Lake is interested in, and also a "way in" to find the tools to create your own choreographies and explore your own idiosyncrasies. The workshop participants will steadily build new work as a group and individually, with regular sharing of new ideas and analysis of choices.
