Choreography as an act of social transformation – Introductory Level

This introductory workshop will explore Annette Carmichael’s practice, using choreography as an act of social transformation.

Annette Carmichael and dance artist, Sumer Addy with lead a workshop especially suited for artists interested in working with regional communities. Through discussion and choreographic tasks we will examine the potential for virtuosity and artistic rigor in community contexts; gain skills in working with people with diverse needs; explore self-care when working in complex environments and learn communication skills required to lead groups.

Biographies - Workshop Facilitators

Annette Carmichael

Annette is a choreographer and creative producer whose work celebrates the role of the artist as community leader.  She facilitates the building of community inside choreographic process, thereby creating an authentic foundation for rigor and experimentation. 

Annette collaborates with regional communities to create large scale, often site specific performance works.  Recent works include Solace+Yearning  (2012 & 2014), My War? (2015), The Creation of Now (2015, commissioned by Ausdance WA), The Snake Run Project (2016, for Perth Festival and City of Albany), The Beauty Index (2017 for Brave New Works festival), A Light Shade of Red (for centenary of Armistice Day 2018) and Chorus (2020).

Sumer Addy

US trained, Sumer Addy has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Modern Dance and a Master of Science in Exercise and Sports Science specialising in the Psychosocial Aspects of Sport. A certified yoga instructor and CEO of the Denmark Chamber of Commerce, Sumer brings a ‘whole of community’ approach to her work as a dancer and workshop facilitator.  Sumer has collaborated with Annette Carmichael on multiple projects including The Creation of Now (2015), The Snake Run Project (2016) and Chorus (2020).
