Stephanie Lake

Mentorship Program

As part of STRUT Dance's national choreographic development program, we are thrilled to announce a new mentorship opportunity that will enable dance artists to intimately engage with established choreographers from across Australia and the world. The mentorship program provides bespoke access to a leading choreographer’s creative process and presentation as part of a local artist’s own artistic and career development.

STRUT Dance is very excited to launch the mentorship program with Stephanie Lake, who will be presenting her epic work Colossus in Perth during February 2020.

Stephanie Lake

Stephanie Lake is a Melbourne-based choreographer and dancer and the director of the Stephanie Lake Company. Her acclaimed works are known for their visceral physicality and emotional punch. She is a winner of multiple awards including Helpmann, Green Room and Australian Dance Awards and her major works tour internationally and nationally.
Stephanie's creations sit on the repertoire of Sydney Dance Company, Chunky Move, Queensland Ballet, New Zealand Dance Company, Dancenorth, Tasdance and Expressions. She collaborates across theatre, music video, film and visual art and has created mass public works for over 1000 participants. She is a Sidney Myer and Australia Council Fellow.

Colossus

Colossus is an exhilarating contemporary dance performance for 50 dancers. Colossus had a sold-out premiere season in 2018 at Arts Centre Melbourne and was met with standing ovations and five-star reviews.

At its heart, Colossus is about humanity and the exquisite complexity of living in close proximity with one another. Choreographically intricate and theatrically bold, it has been described as a ...kick to the solar plexus. Colossus seeks to explore the joy and tension of the collective experience and how we navigate being individuals within the mass.

Our Offer

STRUT Dance is offering to underpin three mentorship places for three West Australian dance artists to work with Stephanie Lake as she re-imagines Colossus in a new Perth context. The mentorship is a three-week fully paid position that will give recipients the opportunity to be part of the Colossus rehearsal process and perform in the work as well as taking on a leadership role in rehearsals. Recipients will also be offered choreographic mentoring from Stephanie Lake plus access to various stages of production and behind-the-scenes work.
