Vikram Iyengar is a dancer, choreographer, theatre director, and performing arts researcher, manager and curator based in Calcutta. Trained in kathak by Padmashree Smt. Rani Karnaa, Vikram is co-founder and Artistic Director of Ranan Performance Collective and initiator of The Pickle Factory – a venue for dance and movement practice and discourse. Noted for the conscious bringing together of classical dance, movement, drama and design creating an experience of total theatre, Vikram’s range of production work in India and abroad has brought together dancers, actors and others, and spans choreography for stage and film, dance and theatre explorations, and performance collaborations. It has continuously explored how kathak can engage in a dialogue rather than be a monologue, creating fresh challenges within, and in relation to, the form.
About Vikram's classIt will be a conceptual / technical entry point into thinking of the dancing body from a kathak point of view. Given the time, I will concentrate on three quite different aspects
- The overlaying of rhythm through degrees of progressively complex footwork that demands quite a unique understanding of the vertical body and leg work in dance
- Subtle and fluid movements through hand gestures and certain smaller muscles that develop quite a different sense of body awareness, movement quality and space
- The technique of pirouettes special to kathak that embodies a central concept of a body spiralling back into itself
