Michael Smith is a Brisbane-based contemporary performer and choreographer who seeks to interrogate the human condition by furthering the capacity to experience, empathise and intuitively create meaning through physical forms. To date, his encompassing practice has spanned across film, contemporary dance, performance art and installation, and dance-theatre.
Michael graduated from QUT (Bachelor of Fine Arts - Dance Performance) in 2013 were he completed a honours research year in 2014.
Michael is currently an artist with The Farm, a Gold Coast based dance-theatre company under the artistic direction of Gavin Webber and Grayson Millwood. He joined the farm for The Ninth Wave in 2018 and The Farm now produce his newest work 'COWBOY'. Michael has also worked for companies and organisations such as STRUT Dance, WA (Decadance 2016 by Ohad Naharin) and Opera Australia (King Roger).
As a freelance artist, Michael has worked with independent choreographers including Liesel Zink, Cass Mortimer-Eipper, Jack Ziesing and Robert Crispe, Lizzie and Zaimon Vilmanis (Prying Eye), Nerida Matthaei (Phluxus2), Gareth Belling (Collusion Music and Dance), Guy Shomroni and Yaniv Abraham, Amalia Pica (IMA), Vanessa Mafe-Keane, Courtney Scheu, Liz Lea and understudied for Lisa Wilson's Wireless.
Michael's choreographic interests have led him to create COWBOY, co-produced by The Farm and Liesel Zink. COWBOY has been developed through platforms such as The Angry Mime (2017), South Bank Corporations 'Flowstate' (2018), The FarmHouse (2018), Dance Massive Open Studios (2019). The work is set to premier in Berlin, 2019, and is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
