James O’Hara from Fremantle Australia, works internationally as a dance performer, teacher, choreographic assistant and choreographer.
A member of Ballet Junior de Genève and recipient of a Princess Grace Foundation Bursary in 2004, James has worked with Ballet Preljocaj, Matthew Lutton and Chrissie Parrott (Malthouse, Melbourne), Ross McCormack (Muscle Mouth, NZ), Marina Abramovic and Stephanie Lake. He has been assistant to Michael Keegan Dolan, Yang Liping and worked extensively as both performer and assistant with Marina Mascarell, Damien Jalet and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Eastman, Belgium). As a guest he has performed with Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet/Ohad Naharin, The Australian Ballet/Gideon Obarzanek, The Norwegian National Ballet, The Paris Opera Ballet and The Bolshoi Theatre. James worked extensively with Steps Youth Dance Company Perth and for two consecutive years as assistant to the artistic director of National Youth Dance Company, Sadlers Wells London. He has given classes and workshops with Transformation Montreal, Bangarra, Sydney Dance Company, Akram Khan, Purchase University NY and WA Academy of Performing Arts, where he created The Roaring Silence… alongside Balázs Busa. In 2018 James created the works Manifest(Oh) in Montreal, A snail watches dust particles in sunlight alongside Eliza Sanders with Footnote Dance NZ and the full length work Movement: A Manifesto with Balázs Busa on the 3rd year students of New Zealand School of Dance. James was a full time tutor at NZSD in 2017/18. He has been nominated for Helpmann, Green Room and Australian Dance Awards and is recipient of a West Australian Dance Award.
